Diagnostic and Treatment Information:

Following examination of the damaged flags using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, evidence of alum salt was found, which might have caused long-term acidic degradation in the flags. The most likely cause of this damage would have been leaked battery acid from other nearby flown hardware. After further analysis of the degradation, treatment began with the flags being cleaned using a low-suction vacuum cleaner. Further cleaning was undertaken using a 75:25 mix of IMS: Deionised water. This was applied to the degraded areas only. Creasing was removed using humidification, which was achieved by employing a Gore-Tex membrane. The Friable degraded areas were supported using a 0.25% solution of Klucel G in IMS. Where further support was required, small tabs of Japanese tissue were used to support threads and fragments that were in danger of becoming detached or were already detached. This was secured at the same time as the consolidant. The flags were placed in archival-quality Melinex sleeves.
