In February 2021, alongside our flight partner, we will be launching a payload up to the International Space Station, where it will orbit outside of the ISS for six months. While orbiting Earth, it will be exposed to the extreme environment of space! On board will be one of these custom astronaut wing patches with your name on!

How does it work?

Before launch, the contents of our payload are integrated into the carriers in a class 10k clean room, where any residual contamination is removed from contents using a thermal vacuum chamber. When the payload is flight certified, it is loaded onto the rocket and launches into space.

After being launched into space, the payload is installed on the MISSE tray by the crew of the space station. The payload then exits the airlock, and once outside, the robotic arm picks up the payload and maneuvers into position aboard the MISSE testing facility, which is near the ISS solar arrays, where it will orbit Earth for around six months.

During this period, the payload and its contents are exposed to the extreme environment of space. This exposure includes the extreme temperatures of space, as well as electromagnetic radiation such as x-ray, proton, neutron, gamma and cosmic rays, microgravity, and the vacuum of space. Then after its 75 million mile journey is complete, the payload is retrieved once more by the robotic arm and then returned to Earth aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule. Then, when all of the final return checks and procedures are completed, we send it straight to your door.

When will I receive my flown patch?

The flight is scheduled for launch on Grumman Cygnus NG-15 in February 2021, and the mission duration will be approximately six months. After the payload returns to Earth in August 2021, it takes NASA 4-6 weeks to complete the return procedures. At which time, we will collect the payload and dispatch your space flown artifact straight to your door. The overall timeline will likely be September-October 2021.

With that said, due to the nature of spaceflight, there can be unforeseen events that are beyond our control, i.e., flight delays due to weather. This may result in delays that could potentially extend the timeframe in which your space flown artifact will be returned to you.

Velcro backing: You can choose to have velcro attached to the back of your patch so that it can be attached to any flight jacket. The velcro will be added to the patch after it has returned to Earth. This process will add an extra week to your delivery time.

Deadline information: If you are ordering after 7th April 2020 please be aware that the name on your astronaut wings patch will not be embroidered on until after the flight, this is because the payload must undergo flight certification shortly after the cutoff date. The patch will be sent up bearing all other details (i.e. outline, wings, colours, etc).

Please note: These custom patches are non-refundable. The patches are intended for a person's name only and as such we cannot accept names of brands, companies, organisations or any other such name.


20th August 2020: Launch Rescheduled to 1st February 2021

We have received official confirmation that due to the effects of Covid-19, our payload has been rescheduled. The payload was originally planned for launch in September 2020 aboard Northrop Grumman Cygnus NG-14 and has now been slated to launch on 1st February 2021 aboard Northrop Grumman Cygnus NG-15 instead. We understand that this may come as disappointing news, but please rest assured that they payload will fly, albeit later than originally planned.
