Apollo 15 Flown CM Kapton Foil Artifact #1
A genuine segment of Apollo 15 flown kapton foil from the Apollo 15 Command Module and comes attached to a mission photograph of Commander Dave Scott saluting the American flag with the Lunar Module and Lunar Rover close by.
This artifact presentation contains a genuine piece of Apollo 15 flown Command Module kapton foil. The Command Module electronics and crew compartments were protected by pressure-sensitive polyimide tape insulation, most commonly referred to as kapton foil. The kapton foil was part of the spacecrafts thermal protection subsystem and coated the exterior of the spacecraft to provide protection against the solar radiation experienced in deep space. During reentry into Earth's atmosphere much of this foil was burned away with the remains being stripped during post-flight operations and restoration.

The space flown material came from the collection of former-Navy, UDT-11 Recovery Team member Alan Buehler. Buehler, one of the "frogmen" who would jump out of the helicopter to assist in the recovery of the crew, recovered this material from the water where it was floating nearby the spacecraft. Buehler was present at the Apollo 15 and Apollo 17 splashdown recoveries.
