As per the Space Qualification Process, prior to flight these NASA 60th Anniversary Pins were integrated into the MISSE Sample Carrier (MSC) clean room facilities in Houston, Texas, near NASA’s Johnson Space Center.

Once integrated the MSC containing the pins were vibration, thermal and vacuum tested for flight verification and when testing was complete, were shipped to Cape Canaveral, Florida. After arriving at the Cape the payload was then loaded onto the S.S. John Young capsule.

The payload was launched aboard the Grumman Cygnus NG-10, otherwise known as the S.S. John Young, on 17 November 2018 at 09:01:31 UTC, and docked a day later at the International Space Station on 19 November 2018 at 12:31 UTC.

Once docked the MSC was removed from the S.S. John Young by the Astronauts on board the station, after which the MSC was sent outside of the airlock and transferred to the MISSE-Flight Facility using the ISS robotic arm, where it will remain for a 6 month flight in orbit around the Earth.

During the flight aboard the Space Station the pins will be subjected to the most hostile environment imaginable… Space.

While in space the pins and patches will be subject to:

  • Temperatures of -100 °C (-148 °F) up to 120 °C (248 °F)
  • Electromagnetic Radiation (UV-A, UV-B, UV-C, Visible Light, IR)
  • Micro-Gravity (Weightlessness)
  • Vacuum of Space

After travelling over 175 million miles during the flight aboard the ISS (4.8 miles per second x 12 months) the pins will return to Earth via SpaceX Dragon Capsule, where it will then be delivered to you as a unique collectable and a piece of space history.

Each pin will come with photographs and certification documentation.

ABOUT THE DESIGN

The Pins and Patches were made to celebrate NASA's 60th Anniversary, an incredible milestone in spaceflight and an even more incredible history. The design shows the NASA logo and the below graphic being held in place by a ''6'', thus representing the 60th Anniversary. The below graphic shows a Command Module having been launched into space from Cape Canaveral in Florida, the historic launch site. Above the Earth sits a half-moon, the other half being made up of 12 stars, thus representing the 12 men who walked on its surface. Finally, beside the Cape are 3 stars, a tribute to the Apollo 1 crew. The design is finished with ''60 Years in Space'' written along the bottom. In all we wanted a design which encapsulated the struggles, achievements and memory of all which NASA has achieved in its 60 years.

EXPECTED DELIVERY TIME

The payload is due to land back on Earth aboard a SpaceX Dragon Capsule in March 2020 and assuming there are no delays you will receive your order 4-6 weeks later.

WANT TO SEE YOUR PIN/PATCH ORBIT THE EARTH FROM YOUR HOME?

NASA has a brilliant website where you can enter your location and see the times when the International Space Station is flying right over you! What an incredible thing to do, watch the Space Station fly by knowing that you own a pin/patch which is currently orbiting Earth! Visit the NASA website here: https://spotthestation.nasa.gov/

DELAYED/DESTROYED UPON RETURN

As we all know, the nature is spaceflight is not perfect. If there is a delay in the return of the Dragon then it will simply mean you may have to wait a little longer for your pin and/or patch to arrive. If there is an explosion and the MISSE payload is lost, don't worry, it is insured! What will happen in this event is we will have new pins and patches made and launched on the next available flight, this would result in a delay anywhere from a month or six or seven months - thus is the nature of spaceflight. But one thing is certain, you WILL receive what you order regardless.

CANCELLATIONS/REFUNDS

The nature of the deal we have with the carrier is that we pay them upfront and thus bear the very significant cost of sending these goods up to the ISS, add onto this the significant amount of time spent on administration, the allocation of serial numbers and so on. As such, we have adopted a no-refund policy for the pins and patches.
